Since
1976 Dr. Woods has been with the ECSE Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute, Troy, New York. He currently teaches graduate courses on information
theory, stochastic processes, and digital image and video processing. His broad research interests include
image and video estimation, restoration, filtering, and specially
video compression coding. He has authored or coauthored over 100 papers
in these fields. His recent work has concentrated on robust and scalable
video coding for networks. He has co-authored one text in the area of
probability and random processes with Henry Stark ( 4th edition, 2012), was the
editor of the 1990 book Subband Image Coding, and editor with Ming Hang
of the 1995 Handbook of Visual Communications. His graduate textbook Multidimensional
Signal, Image, and Video Processing and Coding MSIVPC
was published by Elsevier in 2006, with a second edition in 2011. During the
academic year 1985/1986, he was visiting professor in the Information Theory
Group at Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands. He directed the Circuits
and Signal Processing Program at the National Science Foundation, Washington,
D.C., in 1987-1988. In 2000, he was on sabbatical as Visiting Professor at
Heinrich Hertz Institute, Berlin, Germany, working on video compression
problems.
Dr. Woods was co-recipient of 1976 and 1987 Senior Paper Awards of the now IEEE Signal Processing (SP) Society. He is a former Associate Editor of the SP Society Transactions. He is a former Chairman of the Society Technical Committee on Multidimensional Signal Processing. He is a former member of the Administrative Committee of the SP Society. He was founding Chairman of the Signal Processing Society Education Committee. He served on the editorial board of Graphical Models and Image Processing and was chairman of the Seventh Workshop on Multidimensional Signal Processing in 1991. He received the IEEE SP Society Meritorious Service Award in 1990. He received an SP Society Technical Achievement Award for 1993. He was a founding member of the editorial board of the IEEE Transactions Circuits and Systems for Video Technology. He was co-chairman of the technical program committee of the First IEEE International Conference on Image Processing, Austin, TX, Nov. 1994. Dr. Woods is a Fellow of the IEEE. He received an IEEE Third Millennium Medal in 2000. He received a best paper award of the, now IEEE, then SPIE Visual Communications and Image Processing (VCIP) in 2009.
